Safari in Kenya: A thing or two about Masai Mara Wildebeests Migration

Just recently, the phenomenon wildebeest migration was recognized as the Seventh wonder of the world. It has taken Kenya safari by storm. This natural event takes place in July – October in Maasai Mara which lies 270 kilometers south east of Nairobi. The animals move from northern Serengeti plains in Tanzania across Mara and Talek River in Maasai Mara.

It is one of the biggest migration move ever recorded in the world. It is an annual migration that occurs in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. It is important to note that Serengeti is in Tanzania, while Masai Mara is in Kenya. It is the same natural ecosystem, only divided by man during the years of demarcation into different countries. Fortunately, except for a border posts, there is no barrier that stops the movement. Wildebeest and Zebras migrate in the figures of about 3.5 animals.

Wildebeests and Zebras are herbivores and when they move, the cats that prey on them have a great time with the masses. Same case, the crocodiles in the mara river and other tributary rivers in the Mara lay down in wait for their chance to feed.

The migration is a never ending circle in search for greener pastures. It is continues all year round as each time they are in a different location. In Masai Mara, they pour in from mid-June or early July and continue to September or October. This coincides with the tourist peak season for the Kenya migration safaris. Without a doubt, it is a sight to behold.
