Kenya Bush and Beach Safari: Lions in the Morning, Ocean by the Weekend

Kenya Bush and Beach Safari: Lions in the Morning, Ocean by the Weekend
Safaris are amazing, but they’re also early starts, dusty roads and long days in a vehicle. After a week of that, a few days of warm sea and soft sand feel just right. That’s why the bush and beach trip is one of the most popular ways to see Kenya.
Why Kenya is perfect for bush and beach
Kenya has both in one country. You can go from the Masai Mara or Amboseli to the Indian Ocean coast in a short flight or a scenic train ride. No extra visas, no long international transfers.
The coast has warm water all year, coral reefs, Swahili culture and some of the best seafood in East Africa.
The best beaches on Kenya’s coast
- Diani Beach. Long white sand, palm trees and calm, clear water. Great for families, couples and anyone who wants to switch off. You can also try snorkelling, kitesurfing or a dhow trip.
- Watamu. A quieter spot with a protected marine park. Ideal for snorkelling and seeing turtles.
- Malindi. Lively, with Italian-influenced food, history and deep-sea fishing.
- Lamu. An old Swahili island town with no cars, only donkeys and boats. Perfect for a slow, cultural stay.
How to get from safari to beach
You have three main options:
- Fly. Short flights connect Nairobi and some safari airstrips with Mombasa, Ukunda (for Diani) and Malindi. Fastest and easiest.
- Train. The Madaraka Express runs between Nairobi and Mombasa. It’s comfortable, good value and sometimes you spot animals as you pass Tsavo.
- Road via Tsavo. Drive down from Amboseli through Tsavo West or Tsavo East and add another park on the way. Tsavo is known for its red-dust elephants.
How many days do you need?
We suggest at least 10 to 12 days:
- 5 to 7 days on safari
- 4 to 5 days at the beach
Our 12 Day Bush and Beach safari has the balance about right. If you’re short on time, add 3 beach nights to the 3 Days Mara safari and fly to the coast.
Best time to go
The coast is nicest from December to March and from July to October. The long rains, from about April to June, bring heavy showers and rougher seas. Many beach hotels lower their prices then.
The safari part follows the usual pattern. July to October is migration time in the Mara. January and February are great for both bush and beach.
Safari first or beach first?
We almost always say safari first. Early game drives can be tiring, so ending with the beach lets you rest before your long flight home. It also gives you time to sort through all those photos.
