What to Pack for a Kenya Safari (A Simple, No-Stress List)

What to Pack for a Kenya Safari (A Simple, No-Stress List)
Packing for a safari is easier than most people think. You don’t need special gear or a new wardrobe. You need comfortable clothes, a few smart extras and a soft bag. After many years of picking guests up in Nairobi, here’s what we’ve learned works.
Start with the right bag
If your trip includes a small plane, like our Fly in Samburu Mara safari, airlines usually allow around 15 kg per person in a soft bag. Hard suitcases don’t fit in the small luggage space. Even on road safaris, a soft duffel is easier to load into the vehicle.
Clothes
Think layers and neutral colours.
- 3 to 4 shirts or T-shirts in khaki, beige, olive or brown. These hide dust well.
- 1 or 2 long-sleeved shirts for sun and evening mosquitoes.
- 2 pairs of comfortable trousers and a pair of shorts.
- A warm fleece or light jacket. Early mornings in the Mara and Amboseli can be chilly, especially in an open vehicle.
- A light rain jacket if you travel in April, May or November.
- Comfortable closed shoes and a pair of sandals for camp.
- A wide-brim hat and a buff or scarf for dust.
A quick note: skip dark blue and black. They attract tsetse flies in some areas. Bright white gets dirty fast.
Gear that makes a real difference
- Binoculars. This is the one item guests always wish they’d brought. One pair per person is ideal.
- Camera with a zoom lens, or a phone with good zoom. Bring spare batteries and memory cards.
- Power bank and a universal adapter. Kenya uses UK-style three-pin plugs.
- Headlamp or small torch for walking around camp at night.
- Reusable water bottle.
Health and personal items
- Sunscreen, lip balm and sunglasses
- Insect repellent
- Any personal medication, in your hand luggage
- Malaria tablets if your doctor recommends them
- Hand sanitiser and wet wipes
- A small first aid kit
Before you travel, check the latest entry and vaccine rules for Kenya and Tanzania. A yellow fever certificate is often needed if you cross between the two countries.
Plastic bags: leave them at home
Kenya banned single-use plastic carrier bags years ago. Airport staff may take them from your luggage. Use zip pouches made of cloth or reusable packing cubes instead.
What you can skip
- Fancy clothes. Camps and lodges are casual.
- Lots of shoes. Two pairs is plenty.
- Too many outfits. Most camps offer laundry.

FAQs
Can I wear shorts on safari?
Yes. Just bring long trousers too for cool mornings and evenings.
Do I need hiking boots?
Not for game drives. Light trainers are fine. Bring boots only if you plan walking safaris or a Kilimanjaro climb.
Is it cold in Kenya?
Days are warm, but early mornings and nights in the highlands can be cool. A fleece is a must.
